I thought, “it’s too late for this.” I also thought, “I (singer, woman) am not the person who does this.” 7 years later, I’m a week shy of receiving my doctorate in composition, and have had enough luck to have more than handful of people around the world know and like my music.
This is a wake-up call to the modern musician to be honest about what it takes to thrive in our climate of constant re-innovation in the music industry and an ever-changing artistic landscape.
We now require a more broad and holistic approach that can give us the depth of talent necessary to fully engage in the diverse and vibrant musical communities of the future.
It is time to step up and own our talent and our futures. It is time to become leaders.
